Perception

What we don’t realize is that our entire perception of reality is viewed through a pinhole. Only a small part of the world is visible through the naked eye and there is only a small spectrum of colors that are visible to us. Much of what surrounds us is unseen, because it is either too small, too far away, or has already happened. We use our perception to try and make sense of the world when we perceive just a small fraction of it. What we can see is easily misunderstood if we do not have a full revelation.

Physically, our eyes see the world through a small hole called the pupil. We take in visual information and our brain organizes it to build and interpret a visual picture. If it doesn’t have all the information, then it fills in the gaps. We do this with ideas as well. We often make assumptions and treat it as factual information.

Although our framework is incomplete, it is all we have to make sense of this world. We don’t know what we don’t know, and we can only truly understand our personal perception of reality. Not only do we have unique life experiences, but some may experience the physical senses differently. Some may see colors differently or not at all and some may interact with the world in a different way.

One person’s perception of reality is not the totality of reality.

Therefore, there is value in learning from people with differing perspectives. Someone who sees from a different point-of-view can allow us to develop a clearer perception or understanding. Perhaps two people with varying perspectives actually do agree with each other, but use different words or haven’t fully explained their thinking. Sometimes, two conflicting ideas are both true, but in different circumstances. If we work together and communicate, then we can all see the world more clearly. We have more in common than we realize, even if it is expressed differently.
